Home Decor: Bold Floral Prints for Spring

Vibrant and bold floral prints made an appearance at last year’s High Point Market as one of the top decorating trends for 2011 -  and it’s still going strong.

I know many of you think of flowered fabrics on a grandmother’s couch or wallpaper, but today’s patterns feature stylized designs in bright and cheerful colors.  For example, this Braemore fabric brings together reds, pinks and the hot color of the year, tangerine, against neutral shades of tan and brown.  Upholster a side chair or ottoman in this fabric, and add some life to an all brown leather family room.

Do you have a young daughter who feels she has outgrown her princess bedroom and is looking for something more sophisticated and grown up?  She will love you forever (or at least until tomorrow) when you create a bedding ensemble out of this bold floral pattern, also from Braemore.

Real men love flowers and these bold floral patterns are perfect for a gender neutral space such as a guest room, den, or sunroom.  Not too girly, not too frilly, but just right!

Home Decor: Chase Away the Winter Blues with Citrus Colors

It took a long time this year, but winter did finally arrive.  And while many of us rejoiced like little kids with the first snowfall, the appeal has worn off, and we are longing for springtime.  It is not too early to begin thinking about the changes you would like to make in your home decor for the upcoming spring and summer seasons.  Looking at bright and cheerful citrus colors will certainly chase away those winter doldrums.

As you may already know, Tangerine Tango is Pantone’s color of the year for 2012.  This bright color will add a cheerful touch to a kitchen, laundry room, kid’s playroom, or casual family room.  Pair it with warm shades of cocoa and cream for a sophisticated master bedroom, or update a neutral dining room with new tangerine seat covers.

Kiwi green is another must-have color this year.  Depending on who you talk to, it is also referred to as asparagus, chartreuse, lemongrass, avocado, and apple green.  All of these refer to a yellow based shade of green that is crisp and modern.  Be brave and paint your powder room walls in this new shade of green paired with bright white trim.  Add towels with some citrus appliques and fruity accessories, and it may become the most popular room in the house.

Nothing says summer quite like lemon yellow.  Choose this refreshing color for outdoor linens and upholstery, or recover breakfast room chairs in a bright yellow and easy-to-clean oilcloth.

Pink grapefruit brings to mind last year’s color choice: honeysuckle pink. The luscious shade of pink found in honeysuckle flowers, and similarly, in grapefruit will add a feminine touch to your citrus decorating.  A guest room, teenager’s retreat, little girl’s nursery, or even a casual living space will all benefit from the use of this warm and rosy shade of pink.

Home Decor: Parlez vous Francais in Your Home?

You might be wondering why a decorating blog is asking you about what language you speak.  Well . . .it is because Americans have had a long love affair with French furniture, fashion, and design.

Many people associate French design with ornate gilded furniture and rich and luxurious fabrics (think Versailles).  However, those who are most familiar with French country style also think of bright and cheerful colors, a mix of fabric patterns, and rustic furniture finishes.  Here are some elements of French design that will help you achieve the perfect look for your home.

  • If the relaxed and inviting look of French country appeals to you, add a grouping of colorful pillows to your sofa.  Choose colors from the French countryside such as sunflower yellow, ocean blue, and grass green.  Be sure to mix and match floral prints with stripes, and add a checked fabric for good measure.  You can learn more about mixing and matching fabric patterns here.
  • French country furniture proudly shows its age with a rustic and weathered finish.  Use an old chest or table that has been sitting in the garage, or purchase a new piece that has been weathered with a little help from paint and sandpaper.
  • For those of you who prefer a more formal French look, seek out luxurious fabrics such as silk, brocade and damask to use in window treatments, upholstery, and bedding.

  • Exquisitely carved, painted, and gilded furniture will provide the desired formal look to your home.  Wood pieces that have been richly stained allow the beauty of the details to stand out.
  •  And, finally, don’t forget fresh flowers – a must in every French home.

Home Decor: Wild and Exotic Animal Prints

As I read through decorating and shelter magazines, I have discovered that many designers and home owners are introducing just a touch of the African safari in their home decor.  This might be something as simple as a small piece of statuary from Jonathan Adler’s Giraffe series, for example, or the ever popular zebra rug as seen here.

It is not necessary to design a room around an African “theme” to enjoy the rich heritage and warm feel of this design.  Here are a few suggestions that might help you introduce the wild and exotic to your home decor.

  1. Collections:  If you are fortunate enough to have traveled to Africa, and other exotic locales for that matter, and you picked up a few souvenirs here and there, proudly display them in your home.  Place small baskets and statuary on bookshelves or frame beautiful artwork and textiles.
  2. Fabrics:  Incorporate fun and exotic animal prints in your home decor.  Upholster a small footstool, add some animal print throw pillows, or replace those old and worn chair seat covers with a new and exciting animal print.
  3. Rugs:  Add some warmth to cold wood floors with an exotic zebra rug.  These rugs have been a design trend for many years and are showing up in both contemporary and traditional spaces.  Depending on your own personal tastes, you can use an actual animal hide rug or choose a synthetic that might be a bit more eco-friendly.
  4. Accessories:  It is possible to purchase authentic items from faraway places that will give your home a world-traveled feel.  Have you heard of Juju hats? These unique and colorful items have found their way from Cameroon in West Africa to homes across America and are being used as wall art in many areas.  Hang one above the fireplace mantel or group a couple together for a colorful wall display in the dining room.

Charming Textured Fleece

Are you searching for a unique fabric for cold weather wear or a cozy throw? Textured fleece adds charm to coats, jackets, hats, scarfs, mittens, baby blankets, and throws.

Fleece has become extremely popular in recent years and no wonder. It is easy to work with, even for beginning sewers. With fleece projects like no-sew throws, you don’t even need to sew. Fleece does not rave,l so there is no need to hem it.

Fleece is also soft, warm, durable, and machine-washable. Plus, this high-quality, luxurious fabric is very reasonably priced.

Fleece garments can be casual or more formal. This stylish jacket style would look great in a textured fabric such as bouclé fleece.

Polyester fleece is available in bouclé and rose-swirl textures. Bouclé fleece is a soft, loopy-textured fabric. It’s great for jackets and coats.

Charcoal Boucle Fleece

Bouclé fleece is currently available from OFS in charcoal, pink, and heather gray.

Fleece garments don’t need to be lined, but a lining can be a nice touch. Some clothing patterns for fleece include a lining to add body and extra warmth to the garment.  Fleece can be lined with cotton or polyester fabrics as well as with stable knits.

Whether you choice is standard fleece or one of the new wonderful textured fleece fabrics, you are sure to be pleased with the look and feel of this delightful soft fabric. It makes every project special.

5 Ways to Use Metallics in Your Home Decor

One of the design trends we continue to see each year at Market is the use of metallics on furniture finishes, accessories, and fabrics.  Along with a hint of shine, metallic fabrics provide a bit of bling to ordinary items such as lampshades, accent pillows, and upholstery.

Shiny red pillows are a lovely accent.

As with any eye-catching item in your home, you don’t want to overdo it.  A little bit of metallic goes a long way.

1.  Throw pillows are a fun way to introduce a touch of metallic fabric into your home’s decor. Like in the photo above,  place them on a couch or chair that is upholstered in a solid fabric to really allow the metallic to shine.

2.  Window treatments that feature a metallic fabric will reflect the light from outside and make your windows sparkle.  Choose a subtle metallic stripe or soft sheer to highlight a pretty view or add softness to a less than desirable scene.

3.  Bring some sparkle and shine into the bedroom with bedding items such as shams,  bed skirts, and duvets sewn from metallic fabric.  Pair this on-trend gray check fabric from Robert Allen with cream accents for a soothing master bedroom.

4.  If you want to go heavy metal on a larger piece of furniture like a couch, consider a tone-on-tone like this Beacon Hill cotton and linen fabric with a golden thread woven throughout.  So pretty!

5.  Try something unique like upholstering a small end table (legs and all) or covering a small footstool or ottoman in a shiny metallic fabric. You can use a subtle shiny fabric as a wall covering, too.

Book Review—Oh Sew Easy® Life Style

Click image to go to the publisher's site.

If you are looking for a few easy sewing projects to spruce up your home or organize your clutter, Oh Sew Easy® Life Style by Valori Wells and Carolyn Spencer has a number of interesting projects you may enjoy.

This easy-to-follow book features projects ranging from stylish, colorful pillows to efficient, useful organizers. These projects are ideal for beginners as well as advanced sewers. This well-illustrated book shows basic sewing techniques with step-by-step directions and gives great instructions for each project.

The patterns in this book are suitable for cotton fabrics or cotton blends. Cotton and cotton blend fabrics are very easy to sew. If you are choosing a fabric for your very first sewing project, I highly recommend using a cotton print or solid.

Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton fabrics are a high quality broadcloth suitable for home and fashion accessories. These fabrics come in many beautiful colors. Cornflower Blue is shown.

Cotton fabric cuts easily. Unlike “slippery” fabrics such a polyester satin and chiffon, cotton fabric holds together nicely with pin basting; this spares you the time-consuming process of hand basting and the frustration of working with a fabric that slips and/or wants to jam the sewing machine by being dragged into the feed dogs.

Cotton is also inexpensive and simple to prepare for sewing. If you make a mistake, it is fairly simple to pick the stitches out of a cotton fabric; if you completely “ruin” the project, you won’t feel as bad using an inexpensive cotton rather than a more expensive novelty or luxury fabric. Machine washing and a light pressing is all that is needed to prepare a cotton fabric before you cut the pattern out.
