ABC’s of Decorating: E is for entertaining

E is for entertaining.  I know that, for some of you, this can strike fear in your heart.  The mere idea of planning a menu and setting a table seems overwhelming.  But one of the reasons you have a beautiful home is to share it with family and friends so here are  a few tips that may take the sting out of entertaining.

  • Stop worrying!!  I can’t say this enough.  Nothing ruins a party more than a flustered hostess.  No need to kill yourself cleaning for a week. Remember, the only people who will see how sparkling clean your house is are the first guests to arrive.  After that everyone is busy greeting people, grabbing a drink etc.  An over-cooked entree, a spilled drink, a stopped up sink (or worse) has happened to everyone.  Have an alternative plan such as an additional restroom to use, a quick fix or store bought entree or dessert and a smile at the ready.
  • One of the most enjoyable “jobs” of entertaining is setting the table.  Let your creativity be your guide.  Choose mismatched crystal, flatware and/or dishes.  Pick an unusual color scheme built around your favorite flower.  Combine your heirloom china with thrift store finds.  Indoors or out, casual or formal, the one thing that will set your party apart from others are the small details. Have fun with this.  For inspiration, visit www.eddieross.com, the guru of entertaining.
  • Regardless of any mishaps, if your guests are comfortable the party will, most likely, run smoothly.  So keep your guests comfort in mind when planning seating, food, restrooms etc.  For example, have plenty of places to set a glass along with lots of coasters sitting around.  (people will use them if they see them)  Be sure there is plenty of tissue in the restrooms.  It is a good idea to occasionally “visit” this room during the party so you can be sure things are clean and orderly in there.  Keep a small candle lit since this room is usually dark but be sure it is in a safe spot or safe container.  Better yet, use a flameless candle.
  • I find that music is really only necessary at the beginning of a party.  Once the hum of conversation takes over you can’t hear it anyway.  Be sure to keep the volume low as nothing is worse than having to shout to be heard.
  • For large or small gatherings, set up stations so people know where to go for more drink or food.  This takes a lot of the pressure off of you and keeps people moving and, hopefully, mingling.

Entertaining becomes easier over time.  With each successful party, your confidence grows.  Start small with an outdoor bbq for close friends, for example.  You can then move on to the formal dinner party for the boss.  You just might get a raise out of it!
