Bold Trends are the Rage for Dorms

Bold patterns and colors are the rage for dorm rooms.  Stripes are a fun pattern for sofas and chairs.  The classic chevron (zig-zag stripe) pattern is making a major comeback on everything from flooring to pillows to upholstering. Chevrons can be elegantly formal or vibrantly exotic. Other fresh patterns include various geometric designs and florals.

Tips to make your dorm room unique:

1.  Think focal point.  A bright re-upholstered loveseat or chair can make a cool center of attention.  Make a furniture throwcover for an older piece of furniture if you can’t afford to re-upholster it.

2.   Cool doesn’t have to cost mega bucks.  Curtains are easy to make even if you are just learning to sew.  A couple of hems are all that is really needed to make practical, inexpensive curtains that show your style.  Pillows are another do-able project, especially if you use pillow forms. Burlap sack pillows can be made with only one seam or you can simply put a pillow form in a sack and draw up the drawstring to close it.

3.  Wonderful wall art can be made with fabric.  Checkout these tips from my past posts.

4.  If you are the very creative type consider learning the art of rug making.  Punch hook rugs can be made from any color fabric and are something you will treasure long after your dorm days are done.
