Book Review—Singer Complete Photo Guide to Sewing
The Singer Complete Photo Guide to Sewing by the editors of Creative Publishing is one my favorite guides to recommend for beginning sewers. The revised and expanded edition is so complete! It features 1200 full color step-by-step photos, so it is almost like watching an instructional video.
Instructional videos are nice and can teach you many skills, but I actually prefer still instructional photos. Unlike a video, you can lay the book in front of you as you sew to make sure you are following the right steps. Of course, you can try to follow along with a video, but I often find it hard to keep up with the instructor.
Even if you prefer instructional videos, I am sure you will find this book a helpful reference guide. I highly recommend it.
This book includes great instructions on décor items such as knife-edge pillows, mock box pillows and flange pillows, as well as bolster pillows. Bolster pillow forms make it easy to fashion bolster pillows.
The book also tells how to make different types of slipcovers: reversible seat cover, cushion, futon, and parson’s chair. This guide also gives detailed instructions on window treatments, including rod pocket curtains, Roman shades, tucked Roman Shades, valances, swags, tab curtains and more. Many types of home décor fabric can be used for these items and of course, apparel and quilting fabrics can also be used for many home accessories.
All of these items are great projects for the do-it-yourselfer who wants to decorate their home in style without breaking the budget. A simple change such as new window treatments can bring a great uplift to a room. Combine the new window covers with accessories such as coordinating throw pillows and you will add even more style to your home. With this complete guide it is easy to master both fashion and home décor sewing techniques.
