Book Review–The Complete Guide to Upholstery
The Complete Guide to Upholstery by Cherry Dobson claims to be “stuffed” with upholstery tips and techniques and it certainly is. This well-illustrated guide will help you get started in the fascinating world of upholstery, yet it also gives ample tips for more seasoned upholsters.
Nearly everything you would want to know about the upholstery process is included in Dobson’s book. She has been teaching upholstery techniques for over twenty years and she knows her stuff.
The book includes an overview of the tools you’ll need to make your upholstery jobs look professional. OFS carries top-quality C.S. Osborne upholstery tools and a variety of upholstery notions, such as tacks, tacking strips, and webbing.
Numerous upholstery techniques are included in Dobson’s book:
Preparing a sprung edge
First stuffings and second stuffings
Planning your fabric cut
Deep buttoning and shallow buttoning
Single and double welts
Vandyking and more
Detailed instructions for covering dining room chairs, arm chairs, nursing chairs, settees and chaise lounges are included.
One of the best things about Dobson’s book is that it is so well-illustrated. There is no guessing what to do next or exactly what is meant by the words. Each step has a clear photo or illustration.
Dobson’s book is recent (2009) so there are no obscure terms or unobtainable supplies used in her projects. This excellent reference is also reasonably priced (under $20) and widely available.
