Felt is a Fun Fabric

Try saying that three times quickly!  Felt is a fun fabric and can be used in many areas of your home.

  1. Felt is a great way to protect your glass or wood tabletops from scratches during dinner or parties.  Simpy cut a template out of felt and place on your table, cover with a tablecloth if you like and no worries about damaging your good furniture.
  2. Line the bottom of lamps and other tabletop items to protect the surface from scratches.
  3. Create a fun  no sew window valance for a child’s room.  The felt can be stapled, glued or velcroed to a cornice box and fun cutouts such as scallops or teardrops can be created for a one of a kind window treatment.
  4. Felt lampshades will add a whimsical look to a family room or child’s room.  Wrap a shade with felt or apply cutouts in the shape of stars, flowers or alphabet letters to an existing shade.
  5. If you are making your own vinyl tablecloths, use felt as a backing to add stability to the tablecloth and protect your furniture.  Placemats can also be made from felt.  Edges can be finished with pinking shears or wrapped with ribbon or trim.
  6. All sorts of childrens craft projects can be made with felt from holiday ornaments to totebags for art supplies.
  7. If you are doing some reupholstering yourself, felt can be used to wrap loose stuffing material for a smooth finish.

Felt is not very stain resistant and must be hand washed and air dried so it should be used in areas where you can avoid stains and excessive wear and tear.   But take a look around  and see if there are ways to use this fun, affordable and colorful fabric in your home.
