How to become a Fashion Designer

If you love mixing and matching design elements in different sewing patterns and adding your own touches, a career in fashion design may be for you. Some famous fashion designers, like Ralph Lauren got their start by making their own designs and selling them, but today most people in the fashion industry begin by attending a design school. Fashion design schools teach drawing, form and color composition. They also teach pattern design and making and the details of creating a garment from start to finish.

If you are thinking of applying to a fashion design school, it is a good idea to have some experience with sewing and drawing. The really selective schools require that you present a portfolio of your own design drawings when you apply. Less selective schools allow you to begin with basic art courses. Fashion design programs usually take three to four years to complete.

If school is not for you, but you love fashion and sewing, you might try applying for an internship at one of the fashion houses. Most internships require that you present a portfolio of your designs. The most important thing when applying is to be familiar with all of particular internship’s requirements and to meet them.
