Simplicity’s New Handbag Patterns

We all know how I love sewing handbags. Simplicity now has two wonderful new handbag/tote bag patterns. I simply love their number 2169. It features quilted bags with ruffles. This is a great way to learn fabric piecing, by starting with a small, practical project.

Their number 2168 is also a charmer. It features a very large tote, a convertible tote in two sizes, a phone pouch to wear on your belt, and a belt pattern. This pattern is done in contrasting fabrics and of course, you could make it out of a single fabric.

Any of these bags would look fabulous in Amy Butler fabrics.

Practical Find–Bottoms for Bags

This seems to be my month to feature tote bag and purse products. Have you ever wished for a quick and easy way to give your home sewn bags a nice, stiff, professional bottom. Lazy Girl Designs offers clear acrylic bag bottoms in various shapes. These neat items are called Bag E Bottoms. You simply make a fabric sleeve for the bottom of your bag and slip an appropriate shaped acrylic bottom into the sleeve; then place it in the bottom of your bag.

The ready-made bottoms are designed to fit Lazy Girl bag patterns, but the company reports that they should fit many other patterns as well.

Love new tote bag patterns. Lazy Girl Designs has a delightful selection of interesting tote bag patterns, including bags with zippers.

The zipper really got my attention. I am always afraid of something falling out of an open tote bag or purse. Lazy Girl promises an easy technique to insert the zipper and the bags are truly stylish.

Love Sewing Handbags

If you love to make handbags and totes, but hate to keep using the same old patterns, sewing great Nancy Zieman from Sewing with Nancy and Nancy’s Notions has an idea for you. Create a Bag Templates are durable, plastic templates that allow you to easily design an assortment of bags. The templates are easy to use and quicker to cut out than regular patterns are. Just hold them in place and use your rotary cutter to quickly and evenly cut out the pieces for your stylish bag.

Currently, there are three different style collections of templates available: the California Collection, City Bags, and Town and Country.
