According to Susan Wildemuth at Annie’s Attic, the term chatelaine was used first used for these accessories in the early nineteenth century; prior to that they were called equipage. Many people collect antique chatelaines. Modern versions of the chatelaine are worn around the neck; they are interesting to make.
