Chiffon fabric is often used in stage and theater production when a soft, lightweight fabric is called for. Chiffon material is most commonly produced from silk, but is also widely available in a more economical, synthetic, polyester form. The volume of fabric required in stage theater applications can be quite large, so, oftentimes, polyester chiffon fabric is more cost effective for stage decoration. Ultimately, when used for stage decorations and props, chiffon fabrics must be durable, relatively easy to care for, and cost effective. These fundamental requirements make polyester chiffon a perfect choice when attempting to create stage settings of mystery, romance, luxury or a silky impression.
Elegant stage draperies and swags can be beautifully created from polyester chiffon. To create a swag, drape the chiffon material over a point on each corner of the stage and let it drape between the points. More than two points can be used to create multiple swags across the stage front, or even across the top front of the stage.
Puffy billows can be created, out of polyester chiffon, for stage decoration by gathering the fabric at regular intervals and filling the “pockets” with fiber fill. These billows can be used to create the illusion of water or an ocean. Billows can also be used to mimic clouds for a heavenly scene in the theatrical presentation.
Stage production crews can create bunting from various colors of polyester chiffon by cutting different shaped flags and attaching them to a single line that can be drawn across the stage. Bunting is a popular adornment to ships and as a festive decoration for celebrations and such. Polyester chiffon for the stage is a wonderful choice for bunting because the flags flicker easily in the slightest breeze.
As a stage decoration for a Jewish wedding scene, Chupahs are often created from polyester chiffon. Chupahs are canopies traditionally used in Jewish wedding ceremonies. Literally meaning canopy or covering, the Chupah symbolizes the home the newly married couple will build together. To create the Chupah, stretch the chiffon fabric over a frame of four poles. Attach a pole at each corner to allow the “attendants” at the “wedding” to carry the Chupah. Bring more of the chiffon material down the side poles in a billowy fashion and tie with chiffon ribbons.
Chiffon fabric can be tenacious to work with at times because of its lofty and slick qualities. When cut, it’s edges fray very easily. For stage production purposes, fusible interfacings or glues such as Fray Check can be used successfully. Additionally, chiffon for stage productions must be gently hand washed, as dry cleaning is probably not an option for props and other stage elements.
Polyester chiffon is a very thin, lightweight fabric that can be gathered up into a space just a fraction of its original width. This allows the stage production crew to create beautiful bed canopies and draperies to imbue a sense of luxury or wealth into the stage production. For these stage production requirements, and unlimited others, the choice of polyester chiffon fabric is an obvious and vital one.
