Second only to choosing the color and pattern of your drapery fabric, drapery lining is the most important decision to make when making your own window treatments. After all, you want to protect your expensive fabric from damage caused by moisture, sunlight, heat, and UV rays! There are several types of drapery lining to consider and your choice will be made based on the climate in your area, the exposure your windows receive and, of course, your budget.
Cotton lining will offer some protection from the elements, provide a uniform look to the exterior of your home, and allow your draperies to hang properly.
Thermal lining provides an additional layer of fabric or foam to insulate your home and protect your fabric at the same time.
Black out lining will minimize the amount of light allowed to enter the room. These are important if you need to sleep during the day, or have a neighbor with pesky outdoor lights that shine into your bedroom.
Moisture barriers are present in some drapery linings. These linings will help prevent stains from water, vapor, oil etc.
It is recommended that your drapery lining be in shades of white, ivory, or tan to allow the pattern and color of your fabric to show through.
