Drapery Lining Fabric
Drapery lining fabric is an essential ingredient in most window treatments. Why? Because unlike fashion fabric or upholstery fabrics which are made for a single kind of use, drape and curtain fabric must be versatile enough to accommodate different environmental needs. The way that they achieve such versatility is when they’re combined with drapery or curtain lining- linings that are designed to bring specific benefits, such as a high level of thermal insulation or the ability to block more light. So if only in terms of their versatility, drapery panels- combined with lining fabric- offer an advantage over many other window treatments such as shades and fabric blinds.
So while it certainly is possible to create window fashions without curtain linings, drapery is usually improved significantly, in multiple ways (see our articles about drapery liners), when curtain lining is used.
Which curtain liners to purchase? There are a handful of products commonly used for lining drapery. Liners are typically purchased for the degree to which they block light, their weight and the effect that the added weight will have on the appearance of the finished curtain panel , and for the appearance of the drapery lining itself, which is unique in the world of decorator fabric in that it lends a touch of elegance to window décor without even having to be seen. In this way, drapery lining fabric provides a subtle level of architectural detailing that you're unlikely to find even in other quality custom window treatments such as vertical blinds. And why drapery lining fabric should be an important consideration in serious drapery treatments.
