First introduced by Malden Mills in 1979 (the now famous Polar Fleece fabric), Fleece fabrics have quickly become an exceedingly popular multi-purpose and fashion fabric. Fleece material is warm, light, and breathable. It provides many of the benefits of wool, without wool's weight and scratchiness. Fleece materials are water repellent, stain resistant and non-flammable. And so strong you'll be hard-pressed to puncture or tear them. They're used in both every day and luxury apparel and are produced in interesting blends such as the stretch fleece fabric used by some athletes to enhance running performance.
Similar to many woolens that are woven from wool yarn, fleece cloth is made by twisting polyester fibers into a solid fleece yarn, which is then knitted into plain, printed, or color fleece panels. Fleece suppliers sell these panels in various weights, from a lightweight material used in scarves and light blankets, to a heavyweight fleece fabric (Polar again being a well-known example) with a rich, soft sculpture look and feel.
For sewing, fleece fabric, by the yard or panel, offers some compelling advantages. Fancy cutting is unnecessary, since the material is easily cut with scissors, a craft knife, or a rotary cutter. Sewing is made simpler by the fact that fleece fabrics aren't generally sewn with a tiny stitch size, a high stitch count, or complex decorative stitching techniques. Fleece sewing is made especially nice by the fact that it requires no backing fabric or interfacing and the edges of the fabric won't unravel.
