We are all familiar with the brightly colored checked fabric known as gingham but you may have some questions regarding this “friendly” fabric.

What is gingham?

Gingham fabric is a tightly woven checked fabric, usually consisting of two colors. It was first introduced to America in the seventeenth century as a stripe and has been popular ever since. Today’s gingham material has evolved into a checked or plaid fabric that is often a combination of cotton and man made fibers that make it durable and easy to clean.

What are the uses for gingham?

Curtains, clothing, accessories, throw pillows, bedding, lampshades, toys etc. This list goes on and on. Check gingham is a popular fabric for use in country interiors and children’s rooms. The bright colors make it a perfect choice for use in kitchens as curtains, tablecloths and even seat cushions. Personal items such as children’s clothing, aprons, men’s shirts and ties and women’s blouses can all be made from gingham.

How do I care for gingham?

When combined with man made fibers such as polyester or olefin, checked gingham is a durable and easy to care for fabric. You simply place it in the washing machine and the dryer and it will require little or no ironing. However, 100% cotton gingham can wrinkle easily and may shrink so it should be hand washed and will require ironing to maintain its crisp appearance.

Where do I buy gingham?

Gingham fabric is available in most fabric stores and from on-line fabric distributors in several blends and hundreds of colors.
