The word linen often conjures up visions of elegant summer evenings spent in a linen sundress or trousers; or perhaps beautiful draperies that billow in the wind.
Linen is a natural fiber that comes from the stalk of a flax plant and has many interesting qualities. It is naturally allergen free, anti-static and anti-bacterial. It has low elasticity which prevents the fabric from stretching out of shape but this is also why linen wrinkles easily. Perhaps the most unique feature of linen is that it is able to absorb 20 times its weight in moisture before it feels damp. This is the reason it is so often used in the making of summer clothing.
In its natural state, linen has a light sheen and slightly “bumpy” texture and can be found in neutral colors of white, ivory, tan and ecru. However, it accepts dyes well making it available in just about any color you can imagine.
Whether you choose 100% linen or a cotton or polyester blend, there are several ways to use this beautiful and versatile fabric:
- Summer weight clothing for men, women and children.
- Window treatments such as roman shades and draperies.
- Bedding
- Light upholstery
Whatever your fabric needs are; clothing or interior decorating, linen is sure to lend an air of simple elegance to your wardrobe or your home.
