Chiffon is a sheer fabric that is very lightweight in feel. It can be made from polyester, nylon or rayon but the ultimate in luxury look and feel is silk chiffon. Due to the sheerness of chiffon fabric it is usually layered over another fabric such as organza, tulle or voile.

Silk chiffon fabric is most often used in the making of special occasion clothing such as prom dresses and evening gowns for black tie events. With the exception of the men in the wedding party, silk chiffon can be used in the making of the bridal gown, attendant’s dresses and the mother of the bride outfits. It can also be used to make scarves, lightweight shawls, blouses and lingerie. Even men can enjoy the wonderful look and feel of silk chiffon in their pajamas and boxer shorts. It is available in many colors and can have a shiny, satiny look or a soft, matte look.

Silk is a natural product and requires special care. It should be hand washed or dry cleaned by a cleaner who specializes in the care of silk. Storing your silk chiffon garments in areas that do not get direct sunlight or artificial heat is important. Even the glues and varnishes used in wood furniture such as cedar chests and wooden dressers can harm your silk over time. Your silk chiffon items are most likely very special pieces of clothing to you so you will want to take proper care of them.
