Bag Patterns for Faux Leather
Animal prints and hides are being used everywhere these days. Modern imitation leather, which is also called leather fabric or imitation leather (faux leather), is very realistic and is available in authentic patterns such as emu, ostrich, and alligator. Faux leather fabrics tend to fall in a neutral color range with variations from quartz gray to caviar black. You’re not going to a get a leather smell, but at a more reasonable price, you’ll get pretty darn close to the look and feel.
If you’re not the leather pants wearing type (or even if you are), a bag or purse is an ideal way to sneak a hint of this trend into your wardrobe. For a twist on this theme, a case for your laptop or tablet would also be pretty slick. Here are some of my favorite patterns:
Backpacks: This unique pattern from Butterick includes three unusual shapes with zipper and/or magnetic clasp closures. This is an ideal pattern if you want a backpack without of the ordinary style.
Sling Slouch Bags: These Sling slouch bags from Butterick come in three sizes, some with a contrasting center panel. I love the one with leopard print in the middle and two shades of faux leather on the sides.
Clutch bags: This Butterick pattern features four variations on sweet and simple – choose a buckle, a bow, a rounded flap, a straight flap, or a diagonal. In black snakeskin, one of these clutches would make a perfect companion to an elegant evening dress.
Butterick has come up with another winner with this new addition, which contains patterns for a patchwork tote suitable for faux leather, two clutches, and a carrying case for a wireless reader.
Messenger bags: This Simplicity pattern pairs natural fabrics with synthetic leather trim, handle, and straps for a rugged look.
While you’re shopping for the perfect faux leather fabric for your project, don’t forget the lining material. Suitable linings can be made with cotton or polyester fabrics.
