Durable fabrics for Family Rooms—Part I

The seating pieces in family rooms and dual purpose family/living rooms generally receive more use than any other upholstered pieces in the house and require sturdy, tightly woven fabrics.  Because of their durability, synthetic materials such as Olefin and vinyl have traditionally been thought of as the best options for family rooms. Properly cared for, Olefin can last for decades, even with heavy use and it requires little care; vacuuming the fabric on a routine basis and sponging off any spills  as soon as they happen is all the care this sturdy fabric usually needs.  Richloom, Robert Allen, Beacon Hill, and Pindler & Pindler are among the top manufacturers making stylish Olefin blend upholstery fabrics.  Olefin blends come  in a variety of attractive patterns.

Acrylic blend upholstery fabrics offer even more pattern choices that Olefin.  Although not quite as durable as Olefin or quality faux leathers, acrylic blend fabrics are an excellent choice for furniture that will receive moderate use. Waverly and Pindler & Pindler offer wonderful acrylic blends.

Synthetic faux leathers are beautiful option for heavily used furniture and are available in a number of colors.  Modern faux leathers look and feel amazingly similar to real leather and are easy to clean.  Environmentally-friendly Brisa, Promesa, and Ultraleather from Ultrafabrics are PVC-free and Greenguard Certified. These beautiful, durable fabrics wipe clean with soap and water and perfect for use around children and pets. Ultrafabrics’ faux leathers are fade and abrasion resistant; they provide years of trouble-free use.  Faux leathers are comfortable in both hot and cold weather.
