What to Consider When Deciding if a Sewing Business is for You (Part I)
There are many things to consider when deciding if a sewing business is right for you. You will want to consider financial factors, and time factors, but the number one thing you must consider is your sewing ability.
Do you have the sewing skills necessary to become a successful sewing entrepreneur? You do not have to be an expert in every possible sewing skill, but you do have to have at least advanced intermediate skills in your chosen sewing specialty. For example, if you choose to make custom garments of any type, you must know how to alter garments to fit your customers.
If you do not have the skills necessary at this point, I strongly suggest that you consider taking classes before starting your business. Many community colleges offer reasonably priced sewing classes. Other options include special sewing schools and classes at local craft and fabric shops. If you can’t take a class, consider honing your skills through books and the internet. Internet sources like our blog are great. I will have more on sewing classes in future posts.
