How To Use Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year
Here it is. The 2014 Pantone Color of the Year is…Radiant Orchid.
People seem to be pretty split on this one; many on social media begging for moderation in its use. I, for one, adore the word “radiant” so, well, that’s a good start. But as far as the color goes, moderation does sound like a good idea. Overall though, I think when used alongside accenting colors it’s going to be a good one.
I know throughout the year OFS will likely add fabrics with this lavender shade. But until those go up, I wanted to point out some of our existing fabrics that do the color justice. That way, if you’re on the fence about it, you can find a fabric that has both your home’s existing color palette and something Radiant Orchid-like. By using the fabric in something easily changeable like throw pillows or drapes you can dabble in the trend without fully committing. Here are a few examples of fabrics that might work in that regard.

I want to know what you think of the new Color of Year. Will you use it in your home? In your wardrobe? Please leave a comment below and browse more purple fabrics here.
I agree about using this color in small doses. My bedroom was very close to this color as a child. It took years before I could stand the color again, after being enveloped in it for years! I probably won’t ever use this color in my home, but I will wear it.
My eldest sister’s entire bedroom was that color too Mary, and I remember it so well! Definitely too much on that scale! 🙂
Love it!! Yes I would use it in my home!
Would love to hear/see how you do Rosalee 🙂
I love the orchid color. Wonderful fabrics that coordinate nicely.
Thanks Marilyn! Glad you like it–we just may be seeing a bit of it 😉
I can’t lie – I’ve given up on Pantone’s color of the year. We’re not all gonna switch everything just because they choose a color. 2013 was Emerald – and we all stuck to the same greens we had been using, instead of migrating to their very blue-hued green.
The last one that was really embraced was 2010’s – turquoise, and to be honest, that was already in favor!
Well I can’t argue with that! But it’s still fun to have a color of the year–makes me at least a little more aware of all the different shades there are that might get neglected 🙂
Love the color , But it’s a challenge to work with when trying to blend masculinity in to a couples space unless you go ultra modern. It is a very romantic and feminine color and lends its self well to shabby sheik ,French country, etc.
Such a good point Bethann. I wonder if that masculine feel can be brought into a room in other ways — like with furniture — to create more of a balance?
Wow, that color is NOT a wallflower. I know the tasteful route would be to pair it with ivory or white, gray, silver, etc., but loving a tropical vibe, I’ll pair it with chartreuse. –am totally in love with the Covington Samba Blossom fabric, by the way. It is so festive!
Definitely not Cathy. 🙂 I like your thinking!
The color is amazing and flattering across the board; Interiors and fashions alike. Very easy to incorporate in masculine surroundings with browns, black, gray, etc.
Abbey, you are so cool! (Not only because I received my “Wicked Good Fabric” T-shirt today). But, because the violet colored fabrics you showed us above are actually very attractive. I actually like Branching Out and Layla Heather, and I do not do purples.
Ha you’re sweet Anita! Glad you you got everything and that you’re warming to the purples 🙂
I would only use this color in small doses but I love Waverly Solar Flair Onyx/Lilac Fabric.
Love purple and lavenders, some of the fabrics are beautiful and would make wonderful quilts, pillow cases, etc
[…] wasn’t too sure about it….until I found this fabric and a few others. Now my mind is spinning with […]
Awesome Karianne!
I felt the same way, on the fence about the lavender. But anything was better than last year’s emerald! But as I have been working on some new projects, I have slowly been adding in some lovely pale lavenders, which, blended with gray, looks amazing! Love all of those fabrics you posted, especially the Hip Berry!
Glad you like Susan and are opening up to lavender tones! I kind of love it with navy blue too http://www.onlinefabricstore.net/premier-prints-rosa-berries-drew-fabric-.htm (As I mentioned, I agree, a little here and a little there isn’t so bad 🙂
Its very pretty…..not sure I would use it, maybe in pillows…….I’m so traditional, I think there would be a battle within…..
.Maybe it should be a New Year resolution to add to my list….must try new pattern schemes!
L.
I can understand that Lois but I think you’re right to branch out into new pattern schemes and colors 🙂
