Tulle, netting, and organza can be used to create an elegant mood. These light, airy materials come in a glorious array of colors and are easy to use. Drape tulle gracefully across the ceiling or use it make fabulous bows on chairs and pews. Tulle does not ravel and does not need to be edge-finished. Cut it to the size desired and it is ready to use.
Luxurious opaque bridal and apparel fabrics can also be used to decorate a reception. Satin and crushed organza can be draped over tables. Organza and chiffon also look lovely draped from the ceiling.
Wedding reception chairs can be slipcovered in standard white and then wrapped with a colorful strip of fabric. Coordinate the look by using the same type of fabric as table runner over a white table cloth. You can hem these items if you desire; you can also simply zig zag or overlock stitch the edges to keep them from raveling.
When decorating with any fabric, keep commonsense fire-safety tips in mind. Keep fabric away from candle flames and other open sources of heat; also avoid letting fabric touch light bulbs. And of course, you want to make sure that your lovely decorations do not become tripping hazards.
