How To Make a Pot Holder with Bias Tape

You can make pot holders out of almost any fabric you want, but it’s best to use a fabric that’s either absorbent, or heat resistant. If you do not want to make your own bias tape, there is pre-packaged bias tape available as well. Making it is fun because you can choose the fabric you want, and the bias tape maker is easy to use. I chose to stitch the diamonds on the waffle cloth for a quilted look, but it’s all about what you prefer.

Instructions

Step 1: Measure & cut the fabric

Cut 10″ squares out of the waffle cloth and batting. Place the batting in between the two pieces of waffle cloth. The right sides of the waffle cloth should be facing the outside. Pin about 2″ in from the four corners and with a ruler, measure a 7″ x 7″ square. Make sure to round the corners as you go. Cut the square out and add a few more pins along the sides to keep the fabric in place.

Step 2: Sew the diamonds

Starting from any of the four corners, stitch a diagonal line about 1 ½” in. Continue to stitch diagonal lines 3″ apart until you’ve reached the corner. Do the same in the opposite direction, making the diamond shapes.

Step 3: Make the bias tape

The bias of the fabric is at a 45 degree angle between the selvage and the width. Measure and cut a 2″ x 29″ strip on the bias of the cotton fabric. Insert the strip into the bias tape maker. Use a seam ripper to help pull the tape through. Iron the tape as it’s coming out, while gently pulling the bias tape maker.

Step 4: Sew the bias tape

Fold the bias tape over around the edges and pin. Starting 1″ in, stitch the bias tape along the edge of the fold line, leaving 1″ at the end. Take the two ends, fold them inside out and stitch across. Fold to the right side, stitch, and your pot holder is now complete.

A second way to sew on the bias tape

The second way takes a little bit longer but will create better results. Unfold one side of the bias tape and pin it around the pot holder. Start a half inch in and stitch on the crease of the fold until you’ve reached the end. Back stitch at the beginning and the end. Stitch the ends together and fold the bias tape over to the other side and pin. Top stitch along the fold until you’ve reached the end. Your pot holder is now complete.
