How to Make a Stuffed Dog Toy

Dog toys can be expensive and if you’re fur baby is like Winnie, those new toys rarely last more than a day or two. Even those branded as “indestructible” are no match to her very patient, very calculated, gnawing and nibbling. Then, when she finally reaches the stuffing on the inside she will remove it (ALL of it) with the full amount of care a dog can have.

Winnie has met her match with this one though. Today I’m going to show you how to make a heavy-duty toy that your dog will love and won’t cost you an arm and a leg. We are making ours out of upholstery weight denim, for durability. UPDATE- it’s June, so this toy is about 4 months old and it’s dirty as all get out because Winnie has decided this is a bone she wants to bury in a different hole every few days but the toy is still in tact.

You can download the pattern here or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can make this toy into any shape.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the fabric

Using the template, cut out four bone shaped panels. To use the template, place it on the fold and cut. This will create a perfectly symmetrical shape.

Step 2: Assemble materials

Pin together two panels with the wrong sides facing. Do this to the other two panels as well.

Step 3: Sew together

UPDATE: a few months later, the straight stitch seams to be holding up a little better.

Sew around the edges of both panels. You can use a straight stitch or zigzag when top stitching.

Step 4: Pin together

Pin both panels together.

Step 5: Sew again

Sew around the edges of the bone using a half inch seam allowance. Leave a space on the bottom of the bone large enough to put stuffing in.

Step 5: Stuff

Flip the bone inside out. Stuff the toy with polyester stuffing. You can add a squeaker or even a water bottle if you want.

Step 6: Close the opening and sew around

Fold the seam in on both sides so it matches the rest of the bone and sew around the entire toy to reinforce the stitch. And now your dog toy is complete
