How to Make an Infinity Scarf

Infinity scarves are a trendy accessory that can be worn year round, depending on the weight of the fabric. They are super simple to make, so it’s a great project for beginner sewers. They also make a great handmade gift!

I’m using a cotton print, but a jersey knit is a popular choice because it’s stretchy and has a nice drape. Lightweight fabrics, like gauze, chiffon, or stretch lace are perfect for warm weather. Velvet, Minky, or flannel are cozy options for the winter.

Instructions

Step 1: Cut the fabric

Fold the 2 yards of fabric in half lengthwise and cut down the fold. This will create 2 strips of fabric that are about 22” wide depending on the starting width of your fabric. You can adjust the width depending on how full you want the scarf to look. Only one of the strips is needed to make an infinity scarf, so set the other piece of fabric aside.

To determine the length of your fabric, loop it around your neck to see how loose you want it. Cut off any excess.

Step 2: Sew the fabric together

Tip: If you’re working with a stretch fabric, use a zig zag stitch so the seam can stretch with the fabric.

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise again with the right sides facing. Pin the edge. Sew all the way down the length, using a ½” seam allowance (or whatever seam allowance you prefer). Backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the stitches.

Next, turn the fabric inside out. Put your arm through the tube, grab the end and pull it back through until the ends match up. Make sure to align the seams. Pin the edges together.

Step 3: Sew the ends together

Sew around the tube, backstitching again. Stop before you get back around to the beginning. You want about a 3″ gap to be able to pull the fabric through.

To turn the scarf right side out, grab some fabric from inside and pull it out.

Step 4: Hand sew the hole closed

To learn how to hand sew with a hidden stitch, watch our video tutorial: How to Sew an Invisible Stitch.

At the opening, tuck the raw edges in and hand press them to make a fold on each side. Use a hidden stitch to hand stitch the opening closed, and the infinity scarf is ready to wear!
