How To Sew a Welt Seam & Flat Felled Seam

Welt seams and Flat Felled seams are often used in apparel and accessories to give the piece a nice finishing touch. Welt seams are a quick and easy finish, usually used in lined garments or bags. Flat Felled seams are more durable, and are used in more heavy duty projects.

Welt Seam

After stitching together the pieces of whatever you’re sewing, fold the seam over to one side and iron.

Stitch along the edge, back stitching at the beginning and end. And that’s it! quick and simple.

Flat Felled Seam

This seam is a little more complicated. When stitching your pieces together, make sure to use a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Afterwards, press the seam allowance to one side. Then fold in half and press again. Stitch a straight line along the fold with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, back stitching at the beginning and end.

Stitch another straight line 1/2 an inch from the first line.

Unfold the fabric and press the seam to one side.

Fold the seam like an accordion and press.

Now stitch along this fold line with a 1/8 inch seam allowance, back stitching at the start and end.

This completes the Flat Felled seam.
