Sometimes, the world of duck can be confusing. Who knew that one type of 100% cotton fabric could have so many variations, before you even add color? Sometimes duck is referred to by its weight (such as 10 oz duck) or sometimes it's assigned a number, such as this #4 duck. This is known as, unsurprisingly, a 'number' duck. The number does indicate the weight, but not directly. #4 duck doesn't weigh four ounces. It actually weighs 24 ounces per square yard. The lower the number on a number duck, the heavier the fabric will be. You can choose the perfect duck for any project by making sure you have the right type for your needs. #4 cotton duck is most commonly used for things like farm or military applications, like feed bags or saddle bags, or heavy duty equipment covers. It is heavy and rather stiff, and is undyed and unbleached.

I want to make a tote bag, which number of the natural cotton duck will be the best for this project, I don't want to use lightweight fabric because it needs a stiffer interfacing than a heavier fabric?

What would be the right canvas to use for an ironing table? Is #4 too heavy?
A shopper on Nov 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I would recommend something a bit later, not so much because of the thickness but because it is a bit coarse textured. It would certainly last a long time on your ironing table but you might want something with a finer textured surface.
I am looking for a good thick water resistant fabric to cover an outdoor shed. Will this fabric be a good option? Do you have another thicker material?
A shopper on Nov 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This is the thickest duck we have, but it is not water resistant. However, you could treat it to be water resistant with one of the products below.

Some other water resistant or waterproof fabrics you might try are nylon pack cloth, PVC coated polyester, tarp vinyl, or clear vinyl.

I am doing a large, loose hanging acrylic painting. Which would be ideal for this project?
A shopper on Apr 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This #4 cotton duck would likely work. It's thick enough that it won't be too floppy. The #1 cotton duck is very thick and stiff if that's what you're looking for. We recommend ordering samples to figure out what will work best for your project. (We also have primed canvases but they probably wouldn't be stiff enough for a loose hanging painting.)
what will be the best canvas for oil painting? I want a 10 X 10 to hang on a wall
A shopper on Apr 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We suggest the primed canvases, unless you want to prime it yourself.

Can #4 duck fabric be used for outdoor covers in winter?
A shopper on Sep 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes this fabric could work for that purpose. However, you may find a water repellent duck fabric to be more appropriate as it would be more weather resistant. The #10 Cotton Duck attached is our heaviest water repellent duck fabric. We also carry 10 oz single fill water repellent in more colors. See examples.

HEAVY Canvas
We ordered this to cover our four pottery clay handbuilding tables. After it arrived we realized it was too heavy and textured which doesn't help when our clients are rolling out their clay to handbuild. We also realized that it tears up our sponges, like sandpaper, when we are cleaning the tables. We are hoping it will soften over time. It is HEAVY DUTY material!
