Black and White: A Classic Color Combination

A black and white color combination has always been popular.  There is just something so appealing about the sharp contrast between the two colors that is sophisticated yet inviting at the same time.  Think of all the black and white things you enjoy– your favorite pair of spectator pumps, a dalmation’s spots, a soccer ball or a tuxedo.  Can you imagine anyof these items in different colors?  Now let’s take a look at how that same crisp and graphic look can be used when decorating your home.

  • There is something very sophisticated about contrast welting on upholstered furniture pieces.  Imagine a sleek white sofa outlined in black welting or vice versa, a black sofa with crisp white welting.  Either way, the stark contrast provides a graphic look and makes your furniture more interesting.
  • A black lampshade on top of a white ceramic lamp base is an easy way to add the crispness of black and white to any style room.
  • Of course, sewing accent pillows in combinations of black and white patterns is an easy and fun way to add black and white , regardless of the color scheme in the room.  Remember, these two colors “go” with all colors.
  • Black and white striped awnings will create an instant vacation feel to the exterior of your home.  Combine it with other outdoor fabrics in the same color combination.  Waverly’s Sun n Shade Essence pattern in Onyx (available at www.onlinefabricstore.net) is a richly patterned fabric that will turn your outdoor space or sunroom into a stylish retreat.
  • Nature knows best and animal prints in a black and white combination can add an exotic look to your space. Upholster a small ottoman in a snow leopard fabric or add a zebra rug to the floor for a hint of the wild woman inside you.
  • Frame your artwork in black lacquer frames using a white linen mat.  This works best with black and white photography but the idea can be used with any type of artwork.  It is easy to cover a cardboard mat with white linen for an expensive and custom looking framing job.

Black provides a spot for the eye to land when you enter a room and white can brighten up any space.  While many people associate these colors with contemporary design they work just as well in a country home (think black and white checks) a french country design (toile) or a traditional setting with brass accents.  You decide how best to use this sophisticated combo in your home.
